Hosted by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR)

Time: 7-9 PM

Location:  Renaissance Church, 77 Reservoir Ave, Providence, RI  –behind Popeye’s in the Mashapaug Commons Shopping Plaza

Come to the Public Meeting to:

· Hear about the work ATSDR is doing at the former Gorham Manufacturing Facility Site
· Discuss the results of ATSDR’s Health Consultation for Parcel C
· Talk one-on-one with ATSDR and State and Local representatives from:
o   The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM)
o   The Rhode Island Department of Health
o   Textron Corporation
o   City of Providence
· Ask questions about the work ATSDR, State and Local agencies are doing to protect people’s health and recommendations for future development of the Gorham Site

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) is a public health agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  ATSDR works in communities to provide trusted health information to prevent harmful exposures and disease related to toxic substances.  ATSDR is located in Atlanta, GA.

Asista a la reunión pública para:

· Conocer el trabajo que la ATSDR está realizando en el terreno donde antes estaba ubicada la fábrica Gorham Manufacturing.
· Dar su opinión sobre los resultados de la Consulta de Salud hecha por la ATSDR sobre la parcela C
· Hablar personalmente con representantes de la ATSDR y con funcionarios estatales y locales de:
o   El Departamento del Medioambiente de Rhode Island (RIDEM)
o   El Departamento de Salud de Rhode Island
o   La compañía Textron Corporation
o   La Ciudad de Providence

The site of the former Gorham Manufacturing Company on Adelaide Avenue has received a lot of attention over the past few years.  Residents have raised concerns about the environmental contamination on the site and its potential impact on the health and well-being of the neighborhood, as well as students and staff at Alvarez High School, which was built on the site in 2007.  Residents, elected officials, and the responsible parties who are in charge of cleaning up the site have all played an important role in this process.

TOPIC: Lead Poisoning and Tenants’ Rights

DATE and TIME: Wednesday, April 14th at 6pm

Join us for a presentation about lead poisoning and tenants rights to safe housing with Joanne Costello, a registered nurse and professor at Rhode Island College, and Laura Brion from the Childhood Lead Action Project.  Joanne will educate us about what exposure to lead means for our health and how to prevent exposure to lead hazards in our homes.  Laura will give us information about how tenants can ensure their homes are up to code and safe from lead hazards, what rights tenants have to ask their landlords for housing code improvements, and what financial assistance is available to Providence residents to make their homes lead-safe.

Reuna con nosotros para una presentacion sobre el envenenamiento del plomo y los derechos de inquilinos para un hogar seguro con Joanne Costello, una enfermera registrada y profesora en Rhode Island College, y Laura Brion del Childhood Lead Action Project.  Joanne nos educara acerca de que la exposicion al plomo significa para nuestra salud, y como podemos evitar la exposicion al plomo en nuestros hogares.  Laura nos dara informacion de como los inquilinos se pueden asegurar que sus hogares esten seguros y cumplan con todas las leyes de condiciones de vivienda, cuales derechos tienen los inquilinos a pedir a los duenos para mejoramientos de vivienda, y que asistencia financiera esta disponible a residentes de Providence para hacer sus hogares salvos del plomo.

Join us for a discussion with Joe Martella, Site Manager for the Gorham Manufacturing site from the Department of Environmental Management, the agency responsible for overseeing the clean-up process for the site.  Mr. Martella will update us about clean-up actions that have taken place to protect students and other residents from being exposed to contamination, and the current status of the site.  He will also be available for questions from the group.

Join us for a discussion with Manuel Cordero from the RI Department of Education and the CARE Alliance’s very own Bob Vanderslice from the Department of Health to learn about how the air INSIDE our homes and schools affects our health and the ways we can work to make it better.  Learn about efforts to improve indoor air quality in RI schools through the “Tools for Schools” program and how you can make changes in your own home that reduce asthma and make your home healthier.

Join us for a discussion with Elizabeth Scott from the Department of Environmental Management, speakers from the Narragansett Bay Commission (which provides water service in RI), and the University of Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay Estuary Program, to learn about the quality of our natural water bodies in Providence, like Mashapaug Pond and the ponds in Roger Williams Park.  Learn about the impact pollution has on our ponds and rivers and ways the city and state can make these bodies of water cleaner and safer.

October CARE Alliance: Brownfields and Contaminated Land in Providence

Wednesday, October 14th at 6pm at Knight Memorial Library (275 Elmwood Ave.) in the basement

Join us for a discussion on Brownfields and contamination problems in Providence.  Speakers include staff from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM), the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) New England Office, and Southside Community Land Trust, an organization dedicated to growing food in the city.

Providence has a long and proud industrial history especially in jewelry manufacturing, metalwork, and tool-making.  But along with this proud history comes the reality of environmental contamination that makes our ponds, rivers, and often our land unsafe and polluted.  Examples of Brownfields include old factory buildings or pieces of land where a factory used to be.

The CARE Alliance will discuss what community needs exist in relation to contamination problems, including better communication with DEM and the city about specific sites, or more awareness among community members about the problem.

Reunion de la Alianza CARE en octubre: “Brownfields” y tierra contaminada en Providence

Miercoles, 14 de octubre a las 6pm en la Biblioteca Knight Memorial (275 de la Avenida Elmwood) en el sotano

Reuna con nosotros para una conversacion sobre “Brownfields” y la tierra contaminada en Providence.  Oradores incluyen estaff del Departamento del Medioambiente de Rhode Island (RIDEM), de la Agencia de Proteccion Medioambiental (EPA) de New England, y de Southside Community Land Trust, una organizacion dedicada a la cultivacion de alimentos en la ciudad.

Providence tiene una historia industrial muy larga y orgullosa, especialmente en la fabricacion de joyeria, metales, y herramientos.  Pero, con esta historia orgullosa, viene la realidad de contaminacion medioambiental que para nosotros ha resultado en rios, lagos, y tierra contaminados y peligrosos. Ejemplos de Brownfields incluyen edificios de antiguas fabricas o sitios donde estuvo una antigua fabrica.

Join us for a discussion with Daisy Diaz Rivera, Associate Director of Environmental Services for the City of Providence, on how to improve recycling and and waste disposal in Providence.  Learn about the city’s new recycling policies and tell us your ideas to improve recycling and trash collection in your neighborhood or business.

What are the major environmental justice issues in Providence?  Come learn from neighborhood experts and see for yourself!  We’ll take a tour of one Providence neighborhood–the West End, hear the success stories of how communities have mobilized to improve their neighborhood’s environment and see what problems still exist.  Take home new knowledge and skills to create a tour in your own neighborhood!
